How To Make Classic Bananas Foster

"CLASSIC BANANAS FOSTER RECIPE"

This Bananas Foster recipe is extremely simple to prepare at home. The sweet, cinnamon caramel sauce is bursting with rich banana flavor, and you'll want seconds. This dessert is simple but impressive, taking less than 20 minutes to prepare.

This recipe is surprisingly simple but full of flavor, made by sautéing bananas in a rum-caramel sauce and serving with a scoop of ice cream. This dessert is rich and creamy, and the dark rum gives it depth and warmth. Not only does it smell amazing while you're making it, but lighting the sauce never fails to impress dinner guests.

This Bananas Foster recipe, made famous at Owen Brennan's restaurant and named after Richard Foster, chairman of the New Orleans Crime Commission, was created in 1951 when Brennan challenged his chef Paul BlangĂ© to create a dish featuring bananas. While Bananas Foster is delicious on its own, it can also be served over some simple pancakes or homemade waffles for breakfast!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

Ingredients for Bananas Foster:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter 1 stick (113g)
  • ¾ cup packed dark brown sugar (165g)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 large bananas halved lengthwise
  •  cup rum (80mL)
  • vanilla ice cream to serve

HOW TO MAKE BANANAS FOSTER

  • 1. Slice the bananas in half, lengthwise.
  • 2. In a large saucepan or skillet, heat butter, sugar, and cinnamon over medium-high heat.

  • 3. Cook, often stirring, until butter is melted and mixture is bubbly for about 4 minutes.
  • 4. Add bananas. Cook, gently stirring often, until tender, about 4 minutes

  • 5. Add the rum and remove it from heat.

  • 6. Using a long lighter or long match, carefully ignite rum, swirling pan constantly, until flames die out in the Bananas Foster sauce, about 30 seconds. Serve immediately over ice cream.

Bananas Foster Recipe Tips:

  • Use Ripe Bananas – You’ll want to use ripe but firm bananas so that they do not fall apart when cooking! This is super important as using too ripe bananas will result in a mushy mess.
  • Firm Bananas – You definitely need the bananas firm enough to hold up to cooking.
  • Add Liqueur – Another idea to try is banana liqueur in the butter brown sugar mixture.
  • No Flame Needed – There is no need to use a flame, it cooks perfectly and its delicious by heating in the saucepan.
  • Rum – Any type of rum can be used in this recipe. We used a dark rum, but you can easily use what you have. If you prefer, you can use rum extract.
  • Brown Sugar – You can use dark brown sugar or light brown sugar.
  • Butter – You can use unsalted butter or salted butter. If you use unsalted butter add in a pinch of salt.
  • Double the Recipe – As the recipe is stated it is made for 4 servings. Since my family is large, I always double it. Plus if we have a little leftover, I reheat the next day to serve over my pancakes.
